Acquiring new customers is critical to all businesses, however, is usually difficult and very costly. Effective targeting is critical for growth, expanding presence and generating positive campaign ROI. Even today, many companies attempt to wallpaper their entire footprint with generic inserts of their lead product or provide offers that simply aren’t enticing enough for customers to purchase or switch. Of course there are exceptions, however, nonetheless acquisition costs for these types of campaigns remain very high, making it very difficult to generate positive returns. Are these costs simply the “cost” of doing business? Well, perhaps, but one would figure that cost reduction and effective targeting would be standard practice given such an environment. Keep in mind that it's not just about acquiring customers; it's about acquiring profitable customers.

Cross-Sell / Up-Sell

Increasing one's cross sell ratio to generate incremental revenue should be a priority and a given! For most companies, a huge opportunity to offer and sell additional products and/or services, premium upgraded or bundled based product offerings, still exist as most customers remain “single” service customers. Keep in mind that it's more cost effective to sell an additional product and/or service to an existing customer than it is to acquire a new one.

Retention
​
Given the high costs involved in acquiring new customers, one would figure that having a systematic retention strategy in place would be common practice. After all, your best defense is having a strong offense, and in this case, that implies being as proactive as possible. If your strategy is to simply reach out to customers after the fact, it’s too late. Having said that, the difficulty lies in being able to accurately predict and target customers who are more likely to be dissatisfied and/or ready to defect to one of your competitors. At the very least, your primary focus should be on keeping your best and most profitable customers satisfied. Thus, be proactive, differentiate customers by value, attempt to predict customers at risk and then reach out to them ahead of time.
